Let it Snow

While Tessa's been singing "Tinker Bell, Tinker Bell, tinker all the way..." all season, on Sunday we changed our tune to "Frosty the No Man..."
We really did have a White Christmas, the snow was beautiful. The day after Christmas, the three of us bundled up and headed outside to play. We made a snowman and Tessa announced he should go on the deck. So Daddy carted the heavy snow up the stairs and we parked our snowman where we could see him from the kitchen. Since he looked lonely, we made a snow dog too. Our snow dog went crazy chasing snowballs. Puppy's got ups! Oh the happy sounds of my daughter and husband laughing while the snow was flying.

Christmas Day

Christmas morning was sweet and slow paced at our house. Tessa slept late and then snuggled in bed with us. We probably won't get that luxury again next year. When we finally did get up, she looked over the balcony and said "Presents, look at all the presents!" I just treasured the look of wonder on her little face.
Tessa opened her stocking while I made breakfast casserole. We video called Ryan's parents so they could see her open presents too. When she opened the new princess play tent it literally took up the whole office. The package says it's big enough for six little girls and I believe it. Tessa promptly moved all of her dolls inside and started playing.
My parents came over around lunchtime and my grandma came later that afternoon. We opened presents slowly so it ended up taking most of the day. I loved how Tessa played with each toy before moving on to the next present. We saved the Big One from my parents for the very last. Her very own Cinderella Castle. It looks just like the castle at Disney World and it comes stocked with every princess, prince, horse, carriage, furniture and more. She LOVED it.
It had started snowing earlier in the afternoon and by the time we sat down to dinner there was serious accumulation. My first ever white Christmas. Tessa played and watched a movie while we feasted on prime rib. Just as we were finishing up, my phone rang. Someone needed emergency surgery on Christmas day, sigh. Aside from the working part, it was a wonderful holiday with my loved ones. Merry Christmas!

Christmas Eve in the Holy Land

In keeping with tradition, our Christmas Eve celebration was based on the customs of another country. This year that country was Israel, the birthplace of our Lord and Savior.
G&G did a beautiful job decorating their house all in blue. We mixed in many Hanukkah traditions, including a menorah and a Hanukkah bush. The food was absolutely delicious - lamb and latkes, sufganiot and Sabra and so much more. Even the wine was kosher! Jewish people are known for ordering Chinese food on Christmas so we had some of that too.
Jewish books, games and scarves made for fun presents.
My little "Jewish" American Princess received a Disney Girl doll who came with a completely stocked wardrobe and pony! Oh how we love the princesses!
A Very Merry Christmas Eve!

Gingerbread Playgroup

Our mini gingerbread houses were such a hit last year, that I opted to do them again this year at our playgroup party. I really tried to let Tessa decorate the house herself, a challenge for this ocd mom. She was most interested in eating the icing off of her house. Tessa took it literally that these things are edible. We ended up with one very cute red roof inn and one totally mangled house, but she had fun.

These sweet girls had fun too. So serious with their decorations. We had sprinkles flying everywhere!

And while the girls worked hard in the kitchen, the boys chilled out. Typical right?

Princesses on Ice

The magic that is Disney came to our town this past week-end. For weeks we have been looking forward to this Princesses on Ice show. To say that Tessa loves the princesses is a serious understatement. And we saw them all from our front row seats.

This is the first major production that Tessa has attended. We weren't sure our three year old would actually sit still for two hours but she was captivated. How could she not be with the beautifully dressed princesses, a huge castle, fireworks, music and even Mickey and Minnie Mouse?
Cinderella was the final and most spectacular princess. The show was absolutely wonderful. As a practice run for our Disney trip, this experience was a total success.
And of course, our little princess had to be dressed for the occasion. Tessa wore her fancy Aurora gown and she looked beautiful. I sported my own Sleeping Beauty crown because, let's face it, I'll seize any opportunity to wear a crown. Thank you G&G for celebrating with us and providing the princess wardrobe.
The fact that the Princesses came to town on Tessa's adoption day made it all the more special. Here she is opening one of her presents from G&G - a singing Cinderella doll. Happy Family Day!

Ho Ho Ho

We had our third annual Santa Party last week-end. It's incredible how fast these kids are growing up. The adults had the opportunity to eat, chat and laugh together while the kids ran around like little wild things. Don't be fooled that they are sitting sweetly for this picture. I had just interrupted a game of Duck, Duck, Goose!

After dinner, Santa made his grand entrance. As you can see, Tessa actually sat on his lap this year. I don't think she understands the concept that Santa's main purpose is to give her gifts. After our last Santa/princess episode (see below) I made sure to have something princessy for Tessa to open.
Of course, a book was no match for the cool Rapunzel doll that her friend O.K. received. Oh, sharing is so hard. We have a really great group of friends and I love celebrating with them.

Thanksgiving

We spent Thanksgiving with Ryan's family in hot and humid Houston. Ryan's aunt and uncle were able to come down from Pennsylania again this year too. We all enjoyed eating and visiting, I have great in-laws. In addition to my MIL's good cooking, we ate mexican food, kolaches, chicken fried steak and my favorite - Whataburger. Someday I may just open a franchise here in South Carolina, I love it that much.
Tessa had so much fun playing, swimming and watching the ball games. Yes, I said swimming. It was warm enough to get in the pool. The fact that the water was a chilly 70 degrees didn't slow down Tessa or Aunt Carol. Ryan was a good sport and got in the water too, amazing what daddies will do when their baby girl says "please!" The rest of us preferred to stay on deck and enjoy the warm sunshine.

While we were in Texas, we also got to see our longtime friends. Since each respective child had random episodes of throwing up, we altered our plans a bit. It worked out that we could all hang out together on Friday night and the kids had fun playing together.

We braved the mall to get a picture with Santa. This has become a tradition for me and Paula. Tessa still isn't crazy about the big guy so I focused on her Christmas wish which is to see the princesses. She did pretty well sitting with Santa and taking a picture. Then she hopped down, looked at me and said "Let's go see the princesses!" Um, yeah, why didn't I see the flaw in my grand plan? Our trip to Disney World is still almost three months away. This particular mall does have a Disney store though. Uh huh, Disney store + Christmas shoppers = Mad House! But, it satisfied Tessa's princess craving and we headed home with no purchases but no tears either.

It was a long drive home from Texas but Tessa was a fantastic traveler. A portable DVD player made our life easier but she also happily colored, sang and played with her toys in the car. Can't say she napped much though. She impressed us by sleeping well at night for most of the trip, even in the hotel rooms. Tessa now thinks hotels are the coolest places because not only do they have elevators, but they also have free cookies. An all around good trip.

Louisiana

Ryan lived outside New Orleans for most of his childhood and has fond memories. So we decided to make our drive to Texas interesting by stopping to spend time in Louisiana. It was my first time to New Orleans and it was so fun. We walked the French Quarter and hit the main sights. When we saw St. Louis Cathedral Tessa she shouted "Cinderella's Castle!" (Can you tell we're excited about our Disney Trip?) She loved the party atmosphere of the town and was so good while we toured. Then we relaxed and ate beignets - delish!

The next day we followed the Mississippi River to plantation country. Oak Alley was breathtaking. It has the well deserved nickname of Grande Dame of River Road. The trees are 300+ years old and the house is over 200 years old.

We wandered the grounds, played in the trees, toured the house and chatted with the tourguides. I love the Cajun accent. The house was beautifully restored by a Texas lady who, at one point, let her cattle graze on the front lawn. I love it. Tessa was so good during the house tour that we went to the cafe for a treat. The house specialty is a Mint Julep made with the plantation's own sugar cane. I had two. What can I say? It was hot and they tasted so good.

I was so excited to be able to photograph this beautiful place with my new camera even if the humidity did fog my lense a few times.

Sleeping Beauty

Have I mentioned that we've been having trouble getting Tessa to stay in her room and go to sleep? Naptime is a distant memory, quiet time is never quiet and bedtime is hit or miss. Sometimes, Tessa crashes the minute her head hits the pillow. Other times, we find her in random places at all hours of the night. This is how I found her tonight.

Last night I sat in her room and cuddled her just like I did when she was a bitty baby, only now her long legs take up the whole chair. Staring at my beautiful baby I thought, it's moments like this that I never want to forget.

Loves music, loves to dance

It's a pretty normal thing for my family to randomly bust out in song and do a little impromtu dance. Ryan will surprise me with a slow dance in the kitchen. Tessa and my mom are the most energetic dancers and it makes me smile to see them waltz around the living room together dipping and twirling. Anabelle participates in the exciting potty dance whether she wants to or not. But, this week it was Granny kicking up her heels with Tessa while I made dinner. When I was little, I used to love when Granny would dance with me. I'm so thankful she's still able to do it with my daughter.

After the dancing, these two girls settled down to read about princesses. Sweet.

A Broken Wing

My sweet angel had her first trip to the emergency room this week-end. Tessa's official diagnosis was Nursemaid's Elbow, a subluxation of the head of her right radius (dislocated elbow). She is FINE now but we learned that it is apparently very easy to dislocate a three year old's elbow. I had never even heard of this condition before it happened to my friend a couple of weeks ago. And then, lo and behold, it happens to us too.

The injury occurred while we were getting Tessa dressed for church. She cried and told us her arm hurt but then seemed to get over it. But she refused to use her right arm at all which, I now know, is a classic sign. I wondered if her shoulder was out of joint so I gave her Motrin and decided to watch it. This is what happens when your mom is a nurse, you don't always get much sympathy. So we went to church and about our usual Sunday activities but Tessa's arm didn't get any better. By the time we arrived at G&G's house that afternoon my poor baby was walking with her arm clutched at her side like a little birdie with a broken wing. Pitiful.

It's at this point that we call the pediatrician and head to the ER. Tessa is an awesome patient, happily sitting and coloring (with her left hand) while we wait. After an exam, four x-rays and a hefty dose of Motrin she is cleared to go home. She had popped her elbow back in place all on her own. Now, two days later, it's like it never happened. I am amazed at her resiliency.

Furman University

A big thank you to our friends who gave us great tickets to the Furman game! The weather was absolutely gorgeous, we couldn't have asked for a better day to take Tessa to her very first football game. She was adorable cheering and clapping and dancing to the band music. She kept singing "take me out to the ball game" which cracked me up. (She also sings this when I read about Cinderella going to the ball.) You can tell Daddy's favorite sport is baseball.
We made it to the third quarter before Tessa got too restless to stay in the stands. We wished the Paladins luck and went for a walk around the gorgeous campus.
Tessa climbed the spiral staircase in the tower which is not at all child friendly, liked to give me a heart attack. Then she fed her goldfish to one of the swans. Those birds are huge up close! My favorite part was the romantic rose garden. Furman ended up winning the game and we had a pretty perfect fall day.

Trick or Treat

Halloween fell on a Sunday this year and Sunday is when we usually visit my grandma. We thought the retirment village would enjoy a visit from our Minnie Mouse. So, my mom made cute little boxes of candy and we went reverse trick or treating to Granny's friends. Tessa handed out candy and hugs. It was very sweet and Granny enjoyed showing off Tessa in her costume.

Anabelle had her very own Minnie Mouse outfit for trick or treating in our neighborhood. She really is the best dog, so patient to let me do things like this to her.
My parents stayed to enjoy the Halloween fun. I love that they get to trick or treat with us. We just leave a basket of candy on the porch so we can all go together.

And our friends joined us later for even more trick or treating fun.

I just love little girls! They were adorable posing and smiling for the camera. Happy Halloween!
